Can I use stills from TV programs on a commercial blog?

Hi,
I've been doing research into starting a blog that talks about TV programs.
I'd like to use stills from TV programs past and present (soap operas, dramas, documentaries etc) to put alongside the text. At some point I'd like to be able to do some affiliate marketing, passing through to Amazon or wherever to DVDs etc.
Is this considered legal?
Also if you affiliate market with Amazon (or whoever) can you safely use there sales images?
Does anyone have any advice on this?
